Booking Viking Direct vs. Using a Travel Agent: What Actually Changes
Short answer: the price is the same either way. Viking's Advertising and Commissions Policy requires travel agents to sell at Viking's published rates, so an advisor cannot charge you more — and cannot legitimately charge you less. What changes is what comes with the same fare: permitted onboard amenities, honest itinerary guidance, and a person who answers when something goes wrong at 6am in a foreign port.
The price: identical, by Viking's own rules
Viking publishes one set of fares and requires every travel agency to sell at them. The advisor's commission comes out of Viking's margin, not your pocket. Viking's own promotions and Viking past-guest benefits are Viking's programs and apply to your booking the same way no matter how you book. There is no fare-related reason to book direct — and no fare-related reason not to.
What an advisor may add — and the limits Viking sets
Viking's policy permits agencies to provide non-cash amenities you use onboard your cruise, with the total value capped by Viking according to voyage length. Some agencies and their consortia also have access to amenity programs on select sailings.
